NATIONAL LIBRARIES DAY

Do you ever go to the library?

know I do not go at all now as if I want a book I just pop one in the basket at Tesco along with the shopping or I go on-line and pick it up from Amazon and within a couple of days it is delivered to my door.  If I want to look something up or find out about some history or geography then I use Google, most households have a computer or gadget to go on the Internet to find out anything they want.

So, what is the purpose of libraries?

1) People that cannot afford to buy books.

2) For those that have no internet.  Most libraries have a computer room as well.

I am struggling now to think of any more reasons which I feel is a shame as it is another part of our history that is fading away due to new technology.  When I was a child I used to go every Saturday afternoon with my grandfather and get my four books and I used to read them all.  I was fascinated with it all and put my name down to be a helper on a Saturday afternoon and when my turn came up I was so happy.  I loved stamping them out and going through the index cards, like an office worker in fact I made my own at home and put tickets in all my books.  Lovely memories.

I told Mia I would take her to the library to read some books, I think that is safer than taking them home as she has a small brother that is into everything!   She has no idea what I am talking about so will be good to see her face when she sees all the books.

Could libraries make themselves more popular?

I think they could, I have no idea what they offer as never see any advertisements anywhere or on local pages on-line, so maybe their advertising is the problem.  They could make more of book week, maybe have an event once a month for smaller children as in a character reading books to them.  Or a country a month with all the books and flags on display, maybe an author from that country giving a talk.  Or even authors popping in and reading a passage from their own book and then do signings on bookmarks or cards they bring in.  There could be a homework club, book clubs could meet there or any sort of club or get together like photography, creative writing, knitting etc etc.

Do you think we should do more to save our libraries?

  2. We have a slightly different problem here. They have 6 computers at our local library but there is usually only one working, if you are lucky. Getting on line, even at home is sometimes very difficult as it tends to drop a lot. It must be the worst country in the world for getting information on line so we need our libraries. 🙂
