MAY 2018 – SO MUCH NEWS!

WEATHER

Tuesday 1st May, what a change in the weather, we had rain for over 12 hours yesterday with flooding, trees down, lost electricity, people being swept off piers by huge waves and even beach huts ending up in the sea! Today the sun is shining, a blue sky temperature up a few degrees and they predict a hot bank holiday weekend, hope I have not spoken too soon! img_1238

BIRTHDAYS

I have two birthdays at the weekend, Alfie will be 10 and Izzy 15 It only seems like yesterday that Alfie was born, I need to make the most of him coming to stay as they get to about 14 then hobbies, school and friends take precedent over spending a weekend with your Nan.

CAMPER NEWS

I may take Peaches (the cat) out in the camper one day as I have got her such a cool playpen type thing for her to go outside.

I cannot wait to see what she thinks about that, it folds up really small and for £14.99 I was very pleased, well done Amazon.

We have two bank holiday Mondays this month so that’s great for some workers as they get a long weekend. Also its half term towards the end and that will mean a week away in the camper with family and friends. Really looking forward to that, I do enjoy it when you get everything set up and stay a few days so you can really relax and enjoy everything. I have got a solar charger for my phone so will be trying that out and I want to see how long the leisure battery lasts when using things normally, I may invest in solar panels on roof if needed and when I have saved for them.

BOOKS

I have two book reviews coming out this week then May and June are busy with books so ‘do not disturb as reading’ will be applied a lot. At the moment I am reading The wisdom of Sally red shoes by Ruth Hogan, who wrote the best seller The keeper of lost things, last year. This was a review copy from Netgalley, I am about half way through but will tell you more in the review on publishing day the 3rd May. I am actually having to turn books down at the moment, just so many good ones plus the other promotions and reviews that need doing.

COMPETITIONS

The Sarah & Duck show at The Leas Cliff Hall finished yesterday with the winner watching the show, blog post to come about that. Click on the link above to see the shows that are coming up, some exciting times for Folkestone.

The Old English Company are running a competition now that you can see here also the details are on my blog and website. So many goods on their website again a blog post will be coming about what I buy.fullsizeoutput_164b

FLOWERS

Version 2

My flowers from Prestige Flowers are looking great and filling the flat with gorgeous perfumes. It would be great if you could have a constant display of fresh flowers all the time, even in the summer when I get some from the garden I am toyed with do I leave them so the garden looks pretty or bring them indoors. I try to do both and plant more cut flower types every year.IMG_1462

WEBSITES

So many changes coming up for sites to adhere to, I have just up-dated mine so the SSL encryption is enabled, this means that the ‘s’ has been added to the address as in https://karensworld-writer.co.uk so my site is secure. Soon Google will put up a message saying the site is not secure when you click on it if you have not got this.

https://blog.karensworld-writer.co.uk

Also the new data laws are changing, you are probably experiencing lots of emails where sites are up-dating their policies. I will be doing this as well in the coming weeks.

MY WORLD

As I am running competitions now there will be a newsletter in the coming weeks and I plan to do Author Question Time ( If any authors want to be involved then let me know here.) and giveaways, wow I hear you say. Now I really don’t want you to miss any of this so the best way is to follow me, it’s really easy just click here and fill in your email address in the box.fullsizeoutput_1667

You will then get ALL the news and gossip without missing anything. We all know Facebook is changing so you will NOT see all my posts if you follow on there or any other social media platforms. It would be great to get to know all you followers as that is what keeps me going. You can also follow me at my website here and fill in your email address at the bottom of every page as it is all the same, there are also some different pages all about My World.

OUR YEAR THAT WAS 2017

So many books this year with many standing out as brilliant, I wonder if I can up my total for next year to 70?  I just squeezed in with 60 this year, I really don’t know how people read 200 in a year.

We went to Liverpool to see all the famous places, had a super time.  Was my first experience of airbnb which was great.  I loved the place and would like to go back as there really is so much to see and do there.

Our first spell of hot weather came early in the year and we made the most of it and got the gardens looking fab and enjoyed time on The Harbour Arm.

Easter began with a super lunch with the ladies, I tried to not eat too many eggs and really enjoyed the flowers.

Alfie turned 9 and Jodie got a hot tub, very enjoyable and the cocktail.

Billie, Paul, Jade, Mia and Zac enjoyed a long weekend away at Camber Sands and really enjoyed themselves.

A new garden centre for Folkestone that does great cream teas.  Brilliant day swimming at the outdoor pools, the weather was great.

A fantastic trip to Benidorm with Corinne, we watched ‘Benidorm” being filmed, made some friends from The Sun bar and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.

Two new dessert places opened in Folkestone and doing extremely well.

I took Alfie to the sci-fi show and we had a great time.

My birthday was such fun, had a brilliant lunch with my friends and some great presents.

I have missed all the sheep from Romney Marsh so took a pic when I went over to the dentist.  Alfie had a great time at the cinema, we watched Despicable Me 3.

Lynda’s 70th went on for about two weeks but what fun she had, the lunches and parties were fantastic then she went off for about three holidays.

Folkestone in the sunshine, I love the town I live in and it just gets better and better.

MY WORLD

Ladies that lunch is the best time of each month for me.

Buying the camper was the highlight of the summer and then going to Deal camping with the family was such fun.

Freddie and the twins came to visit for the day, Freddie now knows what is in every drawer and cupboard in the camper lol.

Sometimes you get a picture and when ever you see it, it makes you remember that day and laugh, this is one of those pictures, Beckie could not get her banana open like we (normal) do so she bit into it, I think she was going back to tribal ways! LOL.

My trip to Jersey to re-kindle my memories from childhood but I just did not realise that everything would be different 50 years on.  The places I visited were lovely especially the gardens and the pearl place.  I stayed in a great airbnb with super hosts, I must remember to try the black butter as still not done that yet.  The beaches were the best as they stretched for miles and the sand was golden.  Was a nice trip, with lots of reading and writing achieved.

I stayed at Jodie’s and we looked after Jack for the night, such a smiley boy and so cute.

We had family over from Australia who the girls loved catching up with, we had some nice cream teas and reminiscing.

Billie and Jade both got new horses this year, Jade did a super job of staying on her horse as she was going over the jump.

BEST BOOK OF THE YEAR

OVER MY SHOULDER BY PATRICIA DIXON

What a fantastic story and was so pleased with what Patricia said on her wall on Facebook.

A delicious lunch for the ladies at The Grand and a bargain price so we will be visiting there again next year.

Billie and family had to say goodbye to Pepper who is now the shiniest star in the sky. Was so sad for everyone as he was such a loving little dog.

PURE pet food gave me a pack to try out with Peaches and then to blog about it, well she loved it and it really filled her up, you can purchase it from here.

FOLKESTONE BOOK FESTIVAL

What a brilliant two weeks of everything book related, was great to catch up with Julie Wassmer again and meet other writers.  There was a vast program this year so something for everyone including children.  The workshops were enjoyable and I came away with some new books to read.

Our christmas lunch and another year of monthly lunches over, it is great to have such good friends who support and care about each other.  We have some ‘special’ birthdays next year so lots to look forward to.

Then the snow came very early and caused disruption but all the children loved it even though it didn’t last long.

As we say goodbye to 2017 it’s been fun, sad, happy, hard and many other emotions but let’s go into 2018 with open minds and hearts and hope it is the best it can be.

Last of all we have a writing workshop starting the 16th January that is looking great so get your name booked on that before the places all go.

There are many more events in the book so take a peep and get booking , hope to see you at some of the events.

MONDAYS

Second week of August already, I feel sorry for the people holidaying in Britain as even though it is not cold we have had a lot of rain with weather alerts for this week again. The grandchildren keep asking when are we going to the beach or outdoor swimming pool or the fountains and I keep saying there is no sun and if there is some sun it does not last long.  I am sure they would go anyway but it’s just not as enjoyable for the adults sitting shivering on the beach.

I have been very productive today though as written two book reviews on all my sites, it would be so much easier if I just copy and past them all but I feel a bit awful if I don’t write something a bit different.  I can understand now why authors are always asking for reviews as many readers just do not bother.

REVIEWING TIPS

What ever you think of the book then write it.                                                                             It can be as long or as short as you want it to be.                                                                         You can do it in sentences or bullet points.                                                                                     Authors love to get feedback from their readers and will often connect with them on social media.

WHERE TO REVIEW

Authors Facebook or Twitter                                                                                                               Goodreads  http://goodreads.com                                                                                                       Amazon http://amazon.co.uk                                                                                                               Google+                                                                                                                                                     Pinterest, I have made a board about books I have read.

So there are many ways we can all support our wonderful writers that we have now and the ones that are just publishing their first book would be so happy to receive some feedback from their readers.

I hope that makes it a bit less daunting for some and to be honest before I started blogging I never even thought about writing a review.

I am just about to start my next book which is by Carol Wyer, I am looking forward to this as it is another one in the series about DI Robyn Carter.

I am looking after Alfie in a couple of weeks for a long weekend, he is crazy for Minecraft and very clever at it.  So we are going to read all about Pixelville by Daniel Riding which is a new book that was released last month, I will then get Alfie to review it as well as myself.

I guess I had better go and do some gardening before the weeds take over everywhere, I would much rather be reading or writing though.  I have done a lot of planning for my Jersey trip and decided that I will pop over to Guernsey while I am there as never been there before, so lots to look forward to and I really cannot wait.

I just had to share this as I think it is a great idea and I am thinking about what to send them already and the best bit is, us bloggers get the magazine for free!

So many topics so it would appeal to everyone and no wasting hours, asking friends to read it over to make sure you have not forgotten the most important punctuation lol.

What is there not to like?  You never know who might read your article.

Good luck everyone.

FEELING BLESSED

Number 19 stands out to me as the best one and how true it is.  I may only be a blogger and trying to be writer but the people I have met on my journey have been absolutely amazing.  There is like an instant connection and the support is amazing, I have never known anything like it anywhere I have worked over the years.

My first ‘meeting‘ of authors was at The Writers Holiday in Wales nearly two years ago, a welcome that was rich in friendship which was to last.  I learnt a lot and was given so much advice, enthusiasm and courage to keep going and to never give up.  I heard all their stories as no one is as lucky as JK Rowling or can write a book and get publicity like 50 Shades of grey.  The struggle and determination definitely makes for a good author even if you do have to publish yourself.  Everything is worth it in the end and you just have to keep going, that is what I am now telling myself.  It is hard to not fall into a rut or bad habits and sometimes to even keep going but then you have your FaceBook friends, how amazing are they!  Apart from my friends and family my Nanny Cool FaceBook friends are all authors most I have never met but will comment, support, give advice and are always there for you.  I think writers are the best people on earth and I love all of them.

These flowers are for all the writers out there wherever you are. Xx
